edgewood Youth Sailors sail in The Junior Olympics

More than a dozen of our racing Opti and 420 youth sailors have just returned from the Narragansett Bay Yachting Association's Junior Olympics, run this year on the beach at Quonset Point.  This is a large three day event which is attended by all area yacht clubs and sailing programs - there are hundreds of kids and boats of all classes attending - Optis, 420s, Bytes, Lasers & Laser Radials.

The first day was a training day where the kids were taught on shore and then drilled on the water by college coaches.  It gave everyone an opportunity to train in large fleets, something the schools and clubs can't produce on their own.

The last two days were spent in competition.

Day one saw gusty small-craft warnings out of the SW - testing the high wind sailing abilities of all involved.  The 420s were continually rolled and the optis constantly bailing.

The second day had lighter winds out of the north.

Edgewood had 4 opti sailors attend plus 10 420 sailors.

The event was a great learning experience for all who participated.

Many thanks to all who helped, the event is an enormous undertaking for the coaches, kids and volunteers.
