Sail Newport partners with the Sailing School & contributes sails for Optis

Sail Newport, the public community sailing center in Newport, RI, has announced partnering with Edgewood Sailing School in a donation project to benefit the Edgewood Sailing School youth sailing program, and an initial gift of 14 sails.  The Sailing School immediately extended thanks.

Sail Newport's Executive Director Brad Read gave details of the project in an article first published Feb10 in the national sailing newsletter, Scuttlebut (printed below).  In the article, Brad Read wrote that the project will collect boat parts and gear, principally for Optis, to help re-stock Edgewood's 2011 Youth Sailing program from the January 2011 Edgewood Yacht Club fire.  The Sail Newport - Edgewood Sailing School project will end June 10, when the parts will be delivered to the Sailing School.  Meanwhile, Sail Newport is ready to receive and store equipment donations from sailors, their supporters and their families around the Bay and throughout New England.

Brad Read also announced that, setting the pace for the project, Sail Newport is making the opening contribution of 14 Opti mainsails. These will form the backbone of the Edgewood 2011 Opti program.

Brad Read described Sail Newport's simple goal: "getting the children of Cranston, Edgewood and greater Providence back on the water."

In reply, ESS President Chris Lee wrote for the Sailing School, "This is extraordinary. We thank Sail Newport for generously helping the Edgewood Sailing School in its quest to replace equipment lost in the fire."

RHODE ISLAND YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM NEEDS HELP

By Brad Read, Sail Newport Executive Director

On January 12th, 2011, during one of Rhode Island’s worst blizzards in a decade, the Edgewood Yacht Club, in Cranston Rhode Island, burned down to the water, taking with it all of the Optimist sails, blades, spars, airbags and lines.

Edgewood Yacht Club has a non-profit 501(c)(3) sailing organization that runs its youth sailing program and they need our help.  To get the Edgewood Sailing School back on the water, Sail Newport is donating 14 Club Opti sails to the effort.

To finish rebuilding their fleet, they still need the following gear:

42 Airbags
14 Mainsheets
14 Masts
14 Sprits
14 Booms
14 Daggerboards
14 Rudder/tiller/extensions
14 Paddles

All of the above items will be donated to the Edgewood Sailing School and are tax deductible within IRS Guidelines. ESS will send all donation correspondence.

Items will be collected at the Sail Newport Sailing Center through June 10, 2010 or can be mailed directly to:
